Today author, Steven Reiss joins Coach Dave on CoachVille Caffeine. Matthias Steiner won Gold in Peking in heavyweight lifting. He is now the “strongest man in the world.” Peter Boltersdorf worked with him and his coach for nearly two years with the Reiss Motivation Profile.
Steven Reiss is Emeritus Professor of Ohio State University. He was educated at Dartmouth College, Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital, and Yale University.
In the 1980s Steven Reiss put forth the construct of anxiety sensitivity (AS). This work led to measures that significantly improved the early identification of people vulnerable to various anxiety and stress-related conditions. NIMH funded and military researchers use measures of AS to study ways of preventing significant anxiety and stress-related conditions currently affecting millions of people, including prevention of Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse, and smoking. More than 1,000 studies have been published on AS.
Steven Reiss also published a series of studies on the co-occurrence of psychiatric disorder and intellectual disability. This work has been cited worldwide to justify hundreds of new service programs, and has been recognized with five national awards and prestigious speaking engagements. Steven Reiss has addressed the civil rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice to help prevent abuse of people with intellectual disorders.
In the 1970s Steven Reiss criticized the so-called “undermining effect” of social psychology as a distraction phenomenon of minor significance. In the 2000s Steven Reiss demonstrated multiple logical flaws in the social psychological analysis of extrinsic motivation. Recently, Steven Reiss has generalized the sensitivity construct into a comprehensive theory of life motives. This work has produced the first ever empirically derived taxonomy of psychological needs with demonstrated construct validity, reliability, and criterion validity.
The “Reiss Motivation Profile” (RMP) is a standardized instrument for assessing what motivates someone. Reiss’s motivation work has been applied to personality, business, relationships, education, spirituality, media, and sports. In 2007 a Reiss-Profile coached team earned a world championship before a television audience of more than 20 million. More than 60,000 people have been assessed with the RMP.
Steven Reiss’ New Book
The Normal Personality describes 16 life motives and how they motivate personality. Included is a discussion on how psychological needs play out at work. New methods of coaching are described based.
Book 2008 – Normal Personality
Book 2002 – Who am I? The 16 Basic Desires that Motivate Our Actions and Define Our Personalities
